Abstract
This study developed and assessed the effects of a music psychotherapy program to improve sociability in adolescents with intellectual disabilities. The 12-session program was developed using the counseling program development model(Cheon Seong Moon et al., 2017) based on input from theoretical and field experts. Effectiveness was evaluated with 30 adolescents with intellectual disabilities who were randomly assigned to the experimental (music psychotherapy), comparison (choir-based therapeutic music activities), or control (no treatment) group. Data was collected at pre- and post-intervention to assess self-expression, social skills, and peer relationships. The results indicated that the experimental group experienced significant increases in sociability in primary and sub-domains as compared to the comparison and control groups. Additionally, change patterns were analyzed using a session-by-session experience report, a qualitative analysis based on interview data. Participants reported that self-expression, social skills and positive changes in peer relationships within and outside of the program improved after participation.
